Local pollutants refer to materials released into the air from different sources, such as the industry, transport or energy sector, including CO, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SO2), which cause respiratory illnesses, heart diseases and cancer. Greenhouse gas emissions refer to CO2 (mainly emitted from fossil fuel burning), methane, HFCs, sulfur hexafluoride, nitrous oxides and PFCs. Local pollutants mostly affect the area they are emitted in and have direct health implications, whereas carbon emissions have a global impact and mainly affect the climate.
